Step Into the Global Positioning Shoe

AARP - Inside E Street - Technology developed to track missing children now helps the families of those with Alzheimer's disease. The special chip, embedded in an ordinary shoe, tracks someone who wanders beyond a defined area near the home—and emits an alert if they do. We talk with George Mason University professor Andrew Carle, a consultant to the company that invented the GPS shoe.

GPS Shoe to be Featured in 100 Most Important Inventions of Mankind Exhibit

The GPS Shoe will join the permanent collection of the National Museum of Science and Technology in Stockholm, Sweden being featured in an exhibition highlighting the 100 most important inventions in the history of mankind.

Los Angeles (February 15, 2012): GTX Corp (OTCBB: GTXO), a leader in customizable, patented 2 way GPS Tracking Personal Location Services (PLS) solutions announced today that its flagship product, the award winning multi-patent GPS Shoe will join pioneering inventions including antibiotics, the telephone, the internet, the steam engine, and vaccinations in an exhibition that focuses on the 100 most important inventions in the history of mankind.

The 1 year exhibit debuts at the National Museum of Science and Technology in Stockholm, Sweden at the end of the month, where the GPS Shoe will become part of the permanent exhibition along with an extensive collection of other inventions. “We are thrilled to include the GPS Shoe, as we spotlight the most impactful inventions as identified by the Swedish people,” remarks Alexandra Selvivanova, Curator of the Swedish National Museum of Science and Technology. The exhibition will focus on the 100 most important inventions in the history of mankind combining historical perspective with a look into the technology of the future.

Patrick Bertagna, the inventor of the GPS Shoe, developed the concept and along with Louis Rosenbaum founded the Company Global Trek Xploration (GTX Corp) in order to bring this product to market. “We are deeply honored to have been selected amongst some of the most important inventions of mankind and want to thank the Swedish people for hosting such a historically and culturally rich exhibit.”

Winning the prestigious 2010 People’s Choice Award for Most Innovative Connected Location Device, the GPS Shoe is perhaps the most groundbreaking and game changing application of 2 way GPS technology to date. By using the global GSM network and Google satellite imagery along with a proprietary backend platform, the GPS Shoe provides the ability to locate individuals who have a tendency to wander or become lost due to cognitive disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, or autism. This cutting-edge miniaturized monitoring technology provides peace of mind to caregivers of the tens of millions of adults and children worldwide who suffer from these ailments.

GTX Corp partnered with Aetrex Worldwide, Inc., a global leader in the comfort and wellness footwear category, to design and manufacture the shoes with the GPS tracking technology embedded in the base of the heel. “For over 60 years, Aetrex has spearheaded innovations in footwear and foot care technology, so it was a natural progression for the company to develop a product that incorporates the latest 2 way GPS technology into our shoes,” said Evan Schwartz, President of Aetrex Worldwide, Inc. “We’re proud to offer a product that can offer peace of mind to caregivers and help a growing niche of our population who are in need of constant care.”

The Aetrex GPS Shoes are currently available in two styles for both men and women. To purchase, please visit Aetrex at www.aetrex.com/gps.

Dr. Travis Stork, host of TV’s The Doctors, commented when reviewing the shoe,

“Shocking is the data, for an Alzheimer’s patient who gets lost for twenty-four hours, has a high probability of injury, even death. That’s why knowing where someone is if they are lost (is crucial), time does matter.”

“Sixty percent of these individuals (with Alzheimer’s Disease) will wander and become lost at least once during the progression of the disease” asserts Andrew Carle, Executive in Residence of Senior Housing at George Mason University. The statistics for autism are not far behind with an estimated 48% who will wander off according to TACA.

CBS News touts the shoes as “a literal lifesaver”, which “eases the burden often placed on primary caretakers.”

The GPS Shoe incorporates twenty-one patents and has been spotlighted on national television including CNN, CBS News, Fox News, CBS Early Show, and The Doctors. “This is great if you have an elderly parent who wanders away. In seconds you go on the website, you track them down,” remarks Susan Copen, Consumer Correspondent for CBS News. A CBS Early Show reporter agrees, “This is huge. So many people have elderly family members with Alzheimer’s. And how wonderful that would be to be able to put GPS tracking right in their shoe and not have to worry about them.”
